Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed 48-classroom High Islamic College in Gubio Local Government Area of northern Borno.
The new institution was established to address the long-standing gap between western education and the traditional sangaya Qur’anic system.
The college operates a hybrid curriculum that integrates western education with Islamic studies to provide students with balanced academic and moral development.
Governor Zulum said the project aligns with his administration’s integrated education policy aimed at equipping students with both religious values and contemporary academic skills.
He explained that the school is structured to ensure graduates are grounded in Islamic scholarship while remaining qualified to pursue higher education in conventional institutions.
“Our goal is to preserve the rich tradition of Islamic education while introducing modern subjects and vocational skills,” Zulum said.
He added that the reforms recognize the historic role of sangaya education in shaping discipline and moral values while improving literacy, numeracy, science, technology, foundational English, and vocational training.
Zulum said institutions operating under the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies approved curriculum now provide learners with clear pathways to obtain O-Level equivalent certification and advance to higher institutions.
The Governor said the approach would enhance social integration, reduce educational exclusion, and improve long-term economic opportunities for graduates.
The facility also includes administrative blocks and a library, and is expected to serve hundreds of students from Gubio and surrounding communities.
Zulum also commissioned the Gubio II Junior Day Secondary School executed by the Borno State Government.
During a tour of the facility, commissioner for education Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe said the classrooms were designed to provide safe and inclusive learning spaces with special attention to improving access for adolescent girls.
Meanwhile, Governor Zulum commissioned three projects executed by the chairman of Gubio Local Government Area, Mali Bulama Mali Gubio.
The projects include the Gubio Oil Mills, Zulum Ultramodern Clinic, and Mustapha Gubio Shopping Complex.
