As part of efforts to enhance economic empowerment and provide safer transport options for women, a new program introducing women-only tricycles, popularly called “Pink Kekes,” has been launched in Kano.
The initiative allows women to operate the tricycles and offer transportation services mainly for female passengers. Supporters of the scheme say it is meant to create job opportunities for women and help them achieve financial independence.
The tricycles are painted pink to make them easily recognizable as part of the women-focused transport program. Organizers note that the initiative also aims to make travel more comfortable for women who prefer female drivers.
Advocates of the project believe it can help break barriers in the transport industry, traditionally dominated by men, while simultaneously boosting the local economy.
If successful, stakeholders say the program could expand to other parts of Kano and potentially inspire similar schemes in other Nigerian states.
