The House of Representatives has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate and decisive action against the growing insecurity across Nigeria, warning that continued failure to protect citizens could undermine public confidence in government.
The House of Representatives has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country and has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the menace of banditry, kidnapping, and attacks on innocent citizens.
The lawmakers made the call during plenary following a motion of urgent public importance presented before the House.![]()
The motion was moved by Hon. Ibe Osonwa, who represents Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency of Abia State.
While presenting the motion, the lawmaker described the current security situation as alarming, noting that communities, schools, and places of worship have become frequent targets of criminal attacks.
He stressed that many Nigerians now live in fear due to the increasing activities of bandits and kidnappers across the country.
According to the lawmakers, the continuous abduction of schoolchildren and attacks on vulnerable communities have negatively affected education, economic activities, and social stability.
They observed that many parents are afraid to send their children to school, while several farming communities have been abandoned because residents fear being attacked or kidnapped. The House noted that these developments have contributed to hardship and uncertainty in many parts of Nigeria.
The lawmakers also expressed concern that despite huge budgetary allocations to the security sector over the years, the country continues to face serious security challenges.
They argued that the current security architecture appears overwhelmed by the sophistication and frequency of attacks carried out by criminal groups.
As a result, they called for the immediate deployment of a stronger and more coordinated security strategy capable of restoring peace and protecting lives and property across the nation.
In a strongly worded resolution, the House reminded President Tinubu of his constitutional responsibility as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and urged him to take urgent action to tackle the situation.
The lawmakers further stated that if the security situation continues to deteriorate without meaningful improvement, the nation’s service chiefs should consider stepping aside, having failed to achieve their primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of Nigerians.
They also mandated relevant committees of the House to monitor developments and report back on the implementation of security measures.
The call by the House of Representatives shows the growing concerns of many Nigerians who have repeatedly demanded stronger action against insecurity. As the nation continues to grapple with kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes, citizens hope that renewed efforts by the government and security agencies will help restore peace, strengthen public confidence, and create a safer environment for all.
