The Kwara State Government is preparing to replace paper-based medical records in state-owned hospitals with an electronic system designed to enhance patient care and modernise healthcare services.
The initiative, approved by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, will be implemented by the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board through the HOPE-PHC Project, with training for healthcare workers expected to commence in November 2026.
The board’s Press Secretary, Adamu Sabi, announced the development in a statement issued in Ilorin on Friday.
According to the statement, the initiative is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, improve the management of patient information and accelerate digital transformation across the state’s public healthcare system.
“The rollout builds on an earlier hospital digitalisation pilot involving six hospitals and ongoing efforts to integrate digital solutions into healthcare service delivery,” the statement said.
The electronic medical records system is expected to minimise dependence on paper documentation, provide easier access to patients’ medical histories, ensure continuity of care and promote evidence-based decisions in hospital administration.
The board’s Executive Secretary, Abdulraheem Malik, praised the governor for approving the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards establishing a more efficient, accountable and technology-oriented public healthcare system.
Malik said, “The adoption of electronic medical records would strengthen hospital operations, improve patient information management and support more efficient clinical encounters across Kwara State.”
The board disclosed that the planned implementation would support its existing efforts to improve health information management, including the establishment of its Data Management Committee in August 2026.
To prepare for the rollout, healthcare workers are expected to begin training in November to acquire the necessary skills to use the electronic system effectively.
Reaffirming the board’s dedication to the initiative, Malik said it would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure effective implementation and enhance service delivery in public hospitals.
He further stated that the board remained committed to providing residents with more efficient, responsive and patient-focused healthcare services.
