ZamTracka, a civil society organisation focused on fiscal transparency and accountability, has commended the Zamfara State Government for publicly presenting audit reports and financial statements covering the state’s 14 local government areas for 2025.

The organisation described the development as a major step towards strengthening transparency, accountability and public access to information on local government finances.

In a press statement signed by Hafiz Hameed, Communications Lead of ZamTracka in Gusau in October 2026, the CSO said the presentation included the 2025 Annual Audit Activity Report covering 19 Emirates Council accounts and other ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) under International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) mandates.

It also included the consolidated report and financial statements of the 14 local governments for the financial year ended December 31, 2025.

According to the organisation, the exercise was facilitated by the Office of the Auditor-General for Local Governments.

“To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time such reports have been publicly presented in Zamfara State, marking an important step towards strengthening transparency, institutional accountability, and public access to information on local government finances,” the statement said.

ZamTracka noted that making audit reports and financial statements accessible would support effective oversight, evidence-based advocacy and informed citizen participation in public financial management.

The organisation commended the state government, the leadership of the Local Government Service Commission, the ministry responsible for local government affairs, and the offices of the auditors-general at the state and local government levels for the initiative.

However, it called for further reforms to improve financial management at the grassroots, particularly in internal control systems and procurement standards.

It also stressed the need to implement audit recommendations, strengthen expenditure tracking and programme monitoring, and increase citizens’ participation in local government budget processes.

“The true value of transparency lies not only in making financial information available but also in translating it into corrective action, responsible resource management, and improved service delivery at the grassroots,” the organisation stated.

ZamTracka reaffirmed its readiness to provide technical and institutional support to government agencies and other stakeholders to improve fiscal governance and service delivery across the state’s 14 local government areas.

It urged stakeholders to sustain the progress towards building a more transparent, accountable and responsive local government system.
