Petrol prices have continued to put pressure on Nigerian consumers, with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) offering a N66-per-litre discount to eligible customers as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising fuel costs.

The discount reduces the price of petrol from N1,405 to N1,339 per litre at participating NNPC outlets, according to media reports.

The initiative, initially introduced on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day, has been extended until October 31, 2026.

NNPC Sets Conditions for Discount

Customers seeking to benefit from the discount are required to download the NNPC mobile application and make payments digitally through the platform, according to reports.

Customers who pay with cash at the pump are charged the regular price.

NNPC has described the initiative as a relief measure rather than a return to the Federal Government’s petrol subsidy policy.

The company said the discount was being provided through a reduction in its profit margin, with reports indicating that it could forgo about N4.6 billion in revenue during the period.

Dangote Refinery Adjusts Petrol Price

The Dangote Refinery increased its petrol gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre in September 2026.

The adjustment came amid fluctuations in global crude oil prices and changes in domestic fuel supply costs.

The refinery’s pricing decisions have continued to influence petrol prices in the downstream petroleum market.

Government Outlines Measures to Ease Fuel Costs

The Federal Government has outlined measures aimed at reducing the impact of rising energy costs on Nigerians.

The measures reportedly include prioritising public transport for a 30-day discount, increasing crude oil supply to domestic refineries, removing illegal road taxes and providing cash transfers to vulnerable households.

Other proposed measures include accelerating the rollout of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, reviewing regulations and considering taxation on excess profits made by energy companies.

The implementation and impact of the measures will determine the extent to which they provide relief to consumers.

Fuel Prices Remain a Political Issue

Rising petrol prices have remained a major economic and political concern ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Opposition politicians have criticised the government’s economic policies, while President Bola Tinubu’s administration has maintained its position against reinstating the petrol subsidy.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the revised election timetable.

As fuel prices continue to affect transportation costs and household spending, the NNPC discount is expected to provide some relief to eligible consumers during the promotional period.
