Suspected political thugs on Wednesday attacked supporters of Oriyomi Hamzat, the Accord Party governorship candidate in Oyo State, during a rally held to welcome him back to Nigeria.

The incident took place at Molete, Ibadan, where supporters had gathered for what was described as a peaceful procession to welcome the governorship candidate back into the country.

The procession commenced at the Toll-Gate area of Ibadan, drawing thousands of supporters who marched through Challenge and other parts of the city before the attack disrupted their movement at Molete.

According to reports about the incident, suspected political thugs assaulted participants, interrupting the peaceful procession and raising concerns about the safety of political supporters during campaign-related activities.

The rally was organised by Hamzat’s supporters as he seeks to become the governor of Oyo State under the Accord Party platform.

The details surrounding the attack, including the identities and possible motives of the suspected assailants, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

The incident occurred amid political activities ahead of the Oyo State governorship election, renewing concerns about violence at political gatherings and the need for security agencies to safeguard citizens exercising their democratic rights.
