The Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday embarked on a strategic working visit to Diffa in the Niger Republic.
This is in response to cross-border insurgent activities around the Lake Chad basin continue to pose serious security challenges to communities in Borno and neighboring Niger Republic despite military gains.
The porous borders have allowed remnants of Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters to regroup and launch attacks, threatening hard-won stability in the region.
The visit focused on strengthening existing security and economic cooperation between Nigerian and Nigerien authorities to address insurgency more effectively.
Diffa, just 17 kilometers from Damasak town in northern Borno, currently hosts thousands of Nigerians displaced by the conflict.
Governor Zulum was welcomed by Brigadier General Mahamaduo Ibrahim Bagadoma, the Governor of Diffa, alongside senior Nigerien officials.
Both leaders held closed-door meetings on joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and strategies to sustain recent security achievements that have pushed insurgents from several strongholds.
Zulum also discussed plans to use the improved security climate to support the safe return of displaced farmers to fertile lands around Dutchi town in the Lake Chad basin.
He emphasized that restoring agricultural activity is key to rebuilding livelihoods and reducing the humanitarian impact of the insurgency.
