Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the 2027 general election would serve as a test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, urging citizens to uphold peace, unity and justice.

Jonathan made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday as the country commemorated its 66th anniversary of independence.

The former President appealed to Nigerians to remain patriotic and dedicated to national unity as preparations for the forthcoming electoral cycle intensify.

He said, “In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice.”

Jonathan noted that Nigeria had encountered several difficulties since independence but had consistently overcome them through the determination and resilience of its citizens.

He encouraged Nigerians to remain optimistic and united as they pursue a more prosperous future.

“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands.

“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.

“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.

Jonathan said the country had significant prospects ahead if its diversity and vast natural and human resources were effectively utilised to promote sustainable development.

He also called on young Nigerians to maintain hope and courage while contributing to the creation of a country capable of securing a prosperous future for coming generations.

“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development.

“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” he said.

The former President, however, stressed that achieving the desired future would demand greater responsibility from leaders across all levels of government.

He urged leaders to display stronger patriotism and address the nation’s social and economic difficulties through sacrifice, effective governance and accountability.

“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said.

He also appealed to Nigerians to remain devoted to national service and contribute to building a peaceful, secure and fair society.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
