President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the armed forces to urgently review their operational strategies in the fight against terrorists.
The president directed the deployment of more advanced hardware and surveillance tools to ensure insurgents are completely rooted out.
The order followed the latest terrorist attack in Darajamal community of Bama Local Government Area, Borno State, where dozens of civilians and soldiers were killed by Boko Haram insurgents.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, in a statement through his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha, said the directive was in line with Tinubu’s commitment to eliminate terrorist groups across the country.
Shettima leads condolences over Borno killings
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum had earlier visited Darajamal on Saturday to condole with families of the victims.
His visit came after the Friday night attack that left both civilians and security personnel dead.
Shettima, while mourning the victims on Monday, described the attack as a huge tragedy not only to Borno State but to Nigeria at large.
He said:
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno State, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots. These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families.”
VP backs security reforms, hints at state police
The Vice President further expressed optimism in the capacity of Nigeria’s armed forces to defeat terrorists.
He pointed to President Tinubu’s recent approval for the acquisition of additional drones and the call for intensified reviews of military strategies.
Shettima also highlighted the federal government’s consideration of introducing state police, stressing that certain states face peculiar security threats that require specialized security structures rooted in local culture and terrain.
According to him:
“President Tinubu believes that state-level policing can create stronger security networks at the grassroots level and strengthen Nigeria’s ability to respond effectively to terrorism and criminality.”
FG pledges continuous support for Borno
The Vice President prayed for the families of those killed in the attack, assuring them of the federal government’s full support in confronting the security situation.
He maintained that the government is committed to backing the Borno State government and the Nigerian military until the insurgency is decisively crushed.
“The resilience of our people and the determination of our armed forces will prevail against this menace,” Shettima concluded.
