Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has renewed his call for the creation of state police to help tackle insecurity in the state and across Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025/2026 legal year in Jos, the governor said the time has come for the country to embrace state policing.
“I believe that the time for the creation of state police is now. When we do have state police, I am sure we will be able to respond better and address many situations faster,” he stated.
Recruitment to strengthen Operation Rainbow
Mutfwang praised President Bola Tinubu for supporting the call for state police and urged the National Assembly to push the idea through.
He also announced that Plateau will recruit 1,450 new personnel into Operation Rainbow, a local security outfit, within the next two weeks.
“Yes, the security challenge has looked us squarely in the face, but we are doing all we can,” he said. “By God’s grace, we will be bringing in 1,450 fresh personnel to augment security in the state.”
Citizens urged to give credible intelligence
The governor stressed the need for citizens to work hand-in-hand with security agencies, especially by providing information that can prevent attacks.
“As a government, we cannot do much without credible intelligence,” he explained. “Members of communities are in a far better position to tell us what is happening. That is why we have created helplines across the state to respond quickly to distress calls.”
He added that security would only succeed if communities actively support the government with reliable information.
Judiciary commended for integrity
Beyond security, Mutfwang commended the judiciary in Plateau for maintaining integrity in their work. He promised to continue supporting judges and improving their welfare.
He revealed that retired judges with pending entitlements would soon be paid, while arrears of robe allowances would also be cleared.
The governor urged both lawyers and judges to uphold ethics, good conscience, and the fear of God in the discharge of their duties.
