The Kebbi State Police Command has taken into custody a 20-year-old woman, identified as Maryam Atiku, for allegedly attempting to kill her newborn daughter by burying her alive in a shallow grave in Nasarawa, Dandi Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar explained in a statement on Wednesday that the discovery was made by a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammed, who spotted freshly disturbed soil on his farmland close to Yaro village.
Sensing something unusual, the farmer alerted nearby residents, who dug into the spot and were shocked to find the newborn buried inside, still alive.
Vanguard’s report states that “a team of detectives rushed to the scene, rescued the infant, and took her to a nearby health facility where she is currently receiving medical care. The mother was later traced and arrested.”
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello M. Sani, condemned the act, describing it as “heinous and heartless,” and urged parents and guardians to guide their children against immoral behaviour that threatens societal values.
He gave assurance to residents that the police remain committed to protecting lives and property throughout the state, adding that offenders would be promptly brought to justice.
