The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the National Association of Scraps and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria, has concluded a three-day awareness campaign to educate scrap dealers, scavengers, and residents on the dangers of explosive devices.
The exercise, which took place from September 9 to 11, covered major markets and scrap yards including Tashar Yankaba in Nassarawa, Kasuwar Kwanar Ungogo in Ungogo, and Kofar Waika in Gwale.
Police officials said the campaign was part of wider efforts to reduce risks in communities where people often come across discarded explosives.
Safety first: Police urge residents to stay alert
CSP Cyprian Dariya, Base Commander of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear unit (EOD-CBRN), led the sensitization on behalf of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.
He warned scrap dealers and residents to take immediate precautions when they encounter suspicious items.
“Do not move further, step back, do not touch and call the Police EOD-CBRN operatives,” Mr. Dariya told participants. “These steps are critical to minimizing the risk of harm and ensuring that explosive devices are disposed of safely.”
Scrap dealers hail initiative as timely
The association of scrap dealers welcomed the effort, calling it timely and necessary for their safety and the wider community.
“We are delighted with this initiative,” said Alhaji Salisu Haruna Abubakar, the association’s vice chairman. “The proactive approach of the Command will go a long way in enhancing public safety, especially in our sector.”
Police officials said the exercise reflects a renewed commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Kano State.
“The Command remains dedicated to safeguarding lives and property in Kano State,” Commissioner Bakori said in a statement, urging residents to remain vigilant and to report suspicious items.
Emergency contacts for suspected explosives
Authorities released three emergency numbers — 07033025889, 08035169033 and 08166385447 — for residents to call when they discover suspected explosives.
SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the police spokesman, added that the Command plans to extend similar campaigns to other communities across Kano in the near future.
