The Borno State Police Command has clarified reports surrounding the alleged rape of a five-year-old pupil in the State Low-Cost area of Maiduguri.
The clarification followed a social media post alleging that a suspect linked to the case had been arrested and later released by the police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command said it received a formal petition on November 24, 2025, concerning an incident that allegedly occurred on November 13.
According to the police, the report alleged that the minor was raped at about 9:00 a.m. while on her way to school in the State Low-Cost area.
The suspect was identified as Abdulsalam M. Adakwaki, also known as Yaro.
The command said investigations commenced immediately after the petition was received, with the State Criminal Investigation Department handling the case.
Police authorities dismissed claims that the suspect had been arrested and released, stating that no arrest has been made in connection with the incident.
The police confirmed that the suspect is currently at large and that efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend him.
The command said community leaders, including the Lawan, have been engaged to assist in the search.
The Civilian Joint Task Force has also been requested to support efforts to track and arrest the suspect.
Police said the investigation is being conducted under proper supervision to ensure transparency and accountability.
The command added that civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the National Human Rights Commission are allowed to monitor and engage in the process in line with established procedures.
Residents with credible information on the suspect’s whereabouts were urged to report to the nearest police station.
The police assured the public that justice will be pursued and that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Emergency contact numbers released by the command include 08068075581 and 08023473293.
