Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has presented a proposed N890.33 billion budget for 2026 to the Borno State House of Assembly, outlining major infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities in Maiduguri.
Traffic congestion and aging road infrastructure have remained key challenges in Maiduguri as the city continues to expand due to urban growth and post-conflict resettlement.
To address these challenges, Zulum announced the construction of a new flyover bridge at the Bulumkutu Jagol area, which will become the fifth flyover in the state capital.
The governor made the announcement on Monday during the presentation of the 2026 budget, themed ‘Budget of Sustained Recovery and Growth’.
He disclosed that the proposed budget stands at N890.33bn, with N536.56bn allocated for capital expenditure and N353.77bn set aside for recurrent expenditure.
Zulum said the government will also rehabilitate key road networks within Maiduguri, including Federal Low-cost Road, Bulumkutu-Ngomari Road, and Gwange Road.
He added that the railway line from Bulumkutu to Kasuwan Shanu will be removed to create space for road expansion and other infrastructure works.
The governor revealed that N58.27bn has been earmarked for the Ministry of Works to implement the flyover construction, road rehabilitation, and related projects.
He further stated that major intercity roads, including Maiduguri-Monguno Road, Maiduguri-Dikwa Road, and Bama-Banki Road, will also be rehabilitated.
Zulum said the planned infrastructure projects are expected to stimulate economic activities, improve road safety, and significantly reduce traffic congestion across Maiduguri.
