The Matasan Arewa Youth Development Initiative, a coalition of young Northerners who actively mobilized grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 elections, has voiced deep disappointment over what it calls a continued neglect of Northern youth in the current administration.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kano, the group’s National Coordinator, Abba Ibrahim, said they have resolved to embark on a regional awareness tour across the 19 Northern states.

According to him, the initiative will educate communities about the low level of youth representation in government and advocate for their inclusion in national development.

“We campaigned. We mobilized. We ensured victory. Yet, nearly two years into this administration, the young people of Arewa who stood at the forefront of this political struggle have been ignored,” Abba said.

Group urges Tinubu to fulfill campaign promises

Abba Ibrahim added that the group is worried about what it perceives as the President’s reluctance to engage youth leaders who worked tirelessly to secure votes for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) across the North.

The group called on President Tinubu and other APC stakeholders to honor the promises made during the campaign, stressing that young people deserve meaningful participation in governance and policy formulation.

“We are not asking for handouts. We are demanding recognition, inclusion, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” Abba stated.

Awareness tour to begin in Kano this month

The awareness tour, which kicks off later this month in Kano State, will feature town hall meetings, media engagements, and community outreach activities.

The group said the initiative aims to reignite political consciousness among Northern youths and push for a stronger voice in national decision-making.

The Matasan Arewa Youth Development Initiative reiterated its commitment to peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue in seeking better representation for young people in government.
