President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed from the annual tradition of delivering a nationwide broadcast to mark Democracy Day.

Instead, he will address Nigerians directly from the National Assembly.

Earlier, the Inter-Ministerial Committee for Democracy Day had unveiled a line-up of activities to celebrate 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule in Nigeria.

The schedule included a presidential broadcast at 7 a.m., an address to a joint National Assembly session at 12 noon, and a public lecture at 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Midday update: Tinubu to address lawmakers, skips nationwide speech

However, in a late Wednesday statement, the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, announced a shift in plans.

He stated that since the President would be delivering a live speech before lawmakers, there was no further need for a separate national broadcast.

“Due to President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” Imohiosen clarified.
