The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested more than 250 commercial drivers within two days in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for overloading and carrying two passengers in front seats.
FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Felix Theman, told journalists that despite several engagements with transport union executives to gain their cooperation, taxi operators have failed to obey national road traffic laws as well as manufacturer-specified passenger and load limits for vehicles.
Mr. Theman stressed that overloading of passengers and goods not only threatens lives by preventing the use of seatbelts but also places excessive strain on vehicle tyres and suspension systems.
He disclosed that beginning next week, mobile courts in all six Area Councils will be activated to strengthen enforcement and restore sanity to the FCT transport sector.
He appealed to commuters and passengers to support FRSC’s mission in protecting their rights to safe and dignified travel across the nation’s capital.
According to him, enforcement remains the most civil and effective method to guarantee that safety is not compromised for convenience.
The FCT Commander further warned commercial drivers whose vehicles fail to meet minimum safety standards to upgrade them or risk immediate seizure.
