Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has awarded a posthumous honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The award, approved by the university’s Governing Council, was presented during the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony on Saturday in Katsina.

The university said the honour recognised Buhari’s lifelong dedication to Nigeria’s political progress, visionary leadership, and commitment to national unity and development. They highlighted that his legacy, especially his contributions to the growth and strengthening of the tertiary education sector, made him deserving of the posthumous recognition.

According to UMYU, the decision to honour the former president was intended to reflect on his achievements in governance and nation-building, which the university said should serve as inspiration for present and future Nigerian leaders.

Speaking on behalf of other awardees, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, encouraged graduating students to uphold patriotism, integrity, and selfless service to the nation. Ambassador Rufa’i urged them to use their education to build an inclusive society where all citizens enjoy dignity, peace, and equal opportunities.

The convocation also included the presentation of degrees and diplomas to students across faculties, along with the conferment of other honorary awards recognising outstanding contributions to national development.
