A large group of women from Kofar Mata in Kano Municipal LGA took to the streets on Saturday, August 2, to protest what they described as constant violence, harassment, and killings linked to local gangs known as Yan Daba.
Clad in modest outfits and wielding placards, the women – including mothers, daughters, and sisters – marched peacefully through major streets, demanding the immediate intervention of the Kano State Government and security agencies.
“This has gone on for too long,” one resident told said under anonymity.
“The thugs from Zango and Kofar Mata have been clashing for nearly a week. It’s getting worse. Two boys are already dead, and many others have been injured. We are tired of living in fear.”
‘Nowhere feels safe anymore’ women
Eyewitnesses said the recent wave of clashes often starts without warning, as gang members engage in violent fights, attack residents, and loot local shops.
Kofar Mata has long had a reputation for gang-related unrest, but locals say the situation has now reached an unbearable level.
“We can’t keep raising children in fear,” said another protester. “We just want to live in peace and sleep with our eyes closed.”
Call to action from Kano women
The demonstrators directly called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kano State Police Command to take swift action to restore order and guarantee the safety of lives and property in the area.
“This is not just about Kofar Mata anymore,” a protest leader shouted. ”
“If the government ignores us now, it will spread to the rest of Kano.”
As of press time, there was no official comment from the Kano State Government or the Police Command.
