The Kano State House of Assembly has ordered an investigation into how local government councils are spending their monthly security allocations.
The decision was taken during plenary after a motion was presented by Garba Gwarmai, the member representing Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency. The sitting was presided over by Speaker Isma’il Falgore.
Gwarmai said there had been renewed attacks by suspected bandits in communities in Tsanyawa Local Government Area. He said the insecurity had affected farming, schools, healthcare services and business activities.
He told the House that the latest attack happened in Yan Cibi community in Yan Kamaye Ward, where suspected bandits allegedly tried to kidnap residents and steal livestock before security operatives stopped them.
According to him, the attack killed a community leader and vigilante member, Yusuf Adamu, while several other residents suffered gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
The lawmaker praised the military and the police for recovering many of the stolen cattle. However, he said the attackers escaped because security personnel could not pursue them through the difficult terrain along the Kano–Katsina border.
Gwarmai called on the Kano State Government and the Federal Government to improve security in the affected communities by sending more personnel and providing better equipment and logistics.
He also questioned how the monthly security allocations given to local governments were being used. He alleged that security operatives in the area lacked enough logistical support despite the availability of the funds.
The lawmaker reminded the House that it had earlier directed the affected councils to submit reports showing how the allocations were spent, but said they had not yet complied with the directive.
After deliberations, the Assembly directed its relevant committee to investigate the use of the security funds and ensure proper accountability.
The lawmakers also urged the Kano State and Federal Governments to take urgent steps to strengthen security in border communities, especially in Tsanyawa and Bagwai local government areas, to prevent further attacks and stop the insecurity from spreading to other parts of the state.
