The Kaduna State Government, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has intensified the rollout of its Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme through advocacy visits to eight local government areas, including Chikun, Kajuru, Kachia, Kagarko, Kubau, Ikara, Soba, and Lere.

According to the State Project Coordinator, Malam Abbas Sani, the outreach aims to boost awareness, foster inclusivity, and strengthen community participation in the initiative.

Launched in 2022 and operational since 2024, the SAPZ project targets over $200 million in investments, the creation of 20,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs, and a transition from subsistence to market-oriented agriculture. The Chikun Agro-Industrial Hub will feature facilities such as a power plant and research centre, while the Kubau Agricultural Transformation Centre will focus on processing key crops like maize, tomato, and ginger.

Local leaders expressed commitment to the project, with Chikun LGA Chairman, Engr. Salasi Nuhu Musa, saying, “We want at least 30 percent of SAPZ investments to directly benefit our residents,” while Ikara’s Hon. Bashir Mamman noted that the initiative aligns with the area’s agricultural strengths.

Community members raised concerns about youth involvement and fair access to resources, which officials addressed by promising inclusive mechanization and input support.

SAPZ officers highlighted that the next phase would engage women, youth, and farmers through sensitization and training. “These engagements will educate stakeholders on their rights and roles under SAPZ,” said Mrs. Rose Ndandok, Knowledge Management and Communications Officer.

Gender Officer Hajiya Zainab Aliyu reaffirmed a 50% participation target for women, while Mr. Apollos Agaji announced fertilizer aid, SMART agriculture training, and access to improved seeds.

The SAPZ Kaduna team reiterated its dedication to transparency, empowerment, and economic transformation across host communities.
