The Jigawa State Government has said that resolving the persistent farmers–herders conflict requires shared responsibility from the two groups and other relevant stakeholders.
The State Deputy Governor, Engineer Aminu Usman Gumel, stated this while addressing attendees at the inauguration of the newly elected executives of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Jigawa State chapter, held in Dutse. He emphasised the need for collective commitment by all parties to bring an end to the recurring clashes.
The deputy governor appealed to herders and farmers to work closely with the state government in developing lasting solutions to farmers–herders conflicts across Jigawa State.
He explained that the administration of Governor Umar Namadi remained dedicated to improving the welfare of Fulani cattle rearers, noting that the creation of a Ministry of Livestock was specifically designed to tackle the challenges facing herders in the state.
Gumel congratulated the newly elected executives and encouraged members of the association to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise, describing it as an important means of electing responsible and credible leaders.
Earlier, the National Chairman of MACBAN, Alhaji Baba Usman Nganjarma, assured that the association would sustain its collaboration with the government to foster peace and development between farmers and herders.
He also charged the new executives to carry out their responsibilities in line with the association’s constitution, warning that any official who failed in their duties would be removed.
