The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed that no explosion, fire outbreak, or fuel scooping occurred following the crash of a petrol tanker loaded with 60,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Ringim Local Government Area on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
This was disclosed in a press release signed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam.
The police image maker identified the vehicle as a Howa tanker trailer with registration number Kano 549 BNK, driven by one Muhammad Ali, a 50-year-old resident of Yankatsari village, Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State.
According to the statement, the tanker was on its way to Gujungu town in Taura LGA from Lagos when the accident occurred near Zangon Kanya village.
The driver, while trying to avoid an oncoming trailer and maneuver through a local traffic diversion, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall off the road and spill its contents.
“As a result of which, the vehicle fell off the road. Subsequently, the fuel started spilling on the road,” the statement read.
SP Shiisu said the Divisional Police Officer in Ringim led a team to the scene immediately after a distress call was received. Other emergency agencies, including the Fire Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were also mobilized to the location.
The driver sustained injuries in the crash and was rushed to Ringim General Hospital for treatment.
To prevent a potential disaster, the police cordoned off the area and stopped villagers and passersby from attempting to scoop the fuel. Traffic around the area was also redirected to ensure safety.
“So far, no explosion or fire outbreak was recorded,” SP Shiisu confirmed, adding that the situation is under control.
