The Federal Government through the Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali, has constituted a special committee to investigate the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment and recommend solutions aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.

The Nation reported that “the committee comprises of members from the Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Civil Society Organization and railway passengers.”

The Minister in a statement by the Director of Press and Information of the ministry, Janet Noah stated ”that the committee would investigate the immediate and remote causes of the accident and make recommendations on how to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Members of the committee are expected to also identify ways to enhance the safety and effectiveness of rail transportation in Nigeria.

Heading the committee is Musa O. Ibrahim of (DOOPST), who will serve as the chairman, while Barr. Omotola Olusegun D (Legal) was appointed as the secretary.

Other representatives include Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu, Engr. Zirra Finbar, Dr. Kayode Opeifa (Managing Director of NRC), and Engr. I.A. Ebuniwe (Railway Inspector).

The panel also draws members from Technics Engineering Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd, CCECC, civil society groups, alongside two passenger representatives, one male and one female.
