The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has conveyed Eid-el-Kabir greetings to Muslims nationwide and directed increased security deployments across the country to guarantee peaceful celebrations.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the IGP stated that the Nigeria Police Force remained dedicated to protecting lives and property during the festive season.
It read, “The Inspector-General joins all Nigerians in celebrating this auspicious occasion and prays for peace, unity, and prosperity for our great nation.”
The police boss instructed Commissioners of Police and Tactical Commanders in all state commands and the Federal Capital Territory to reinforce security deployments and step up proactive policing measures nationwide.
According to the statement, the operational strategies include the planned deployment of tactical squads, intelligence personnel and conventional police officers to Eid prayer grounds, highways, motor parks, recreational centres, critical national infrastructure and other public locations expected to record large gatherings during the celebrations.
The statement further noted that the police would strengthen visibility policing, joint patrols, surveillance operations and intelligence-driven stop-and-search duties targeted at preventing criminal activities and ensuring prompt responses to security threats.
The IGP appealed to Nigerians to stay alert and assist security agencies with useful information, stressing that public vigilance remained essential to sustaining safety during the festivities.
“Every Nigerian has a role to play in keeping our communities safe during this festive season. A timely report from a vigilant citizen can save lives,” he said.
Disu urged residents to immediately report suspicious individuals, unattended bags, unusual gatherings or movements around Eid grounds, markets, motor parks and other public areas.
“Do not ignore suspicious activity. Do not assume someone else has already reported it. Your call is confidential and could prevent a tragedy,” the statement quoted the IGP as saying.
The police also announced dedicated emergency contact numbers for the public: 08057000001, 08057000002, 09133333785 and 09133333786.
While extending wishes for a peaceful and joyful Eid-el-Adha celebration to Muslims, the IGP reaffirmed the force’s “steadfast commitment to public safety and national security.”
