The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Abuja-based real estate agent Hajia Adama Adamu for allegedly defrauding a complainant of N288 million through a property scam.
The anti-corruption agency made this known via a post on its official X handle on Wednesday, stating that Adamu was arrested by operatives from the EFCC’s Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition.
The commission revealed that Adamu deceived Alhaji Tanko Yawale by promising to facilitate the purchase of a property in Abuja, but allegedly failed to deliver.
“The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Ahmed Adamu, over an alleged property fraud to the tune of N288 million.”
“The suspect allegedly obtained the money from Alhaji Tanko Yawale under the pretext of facilitating the purchase of a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja,” the agency stated.
The EFCC further noted that after receiving the payment, Adamu failed to provide the necessary property documentation and became evasive, causing suspicion and prompting the complainant to file a formal petition.
“Following the payment, Hajia Adamu allegedly failed to provide the complainant with valid documents for the property and subsequently became evasive, raising suspicion and prompting a formal petition to the EFCC,” the commission said.
Property fraud continues to be a major concern in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in major urban areas like Abuja, where many unsuspecting buyers fall victim to agents posing as legitimate professionals.
The EFCC has recently ramped up its efforts to combat land and property-related fraud, urging the public to verify property documents and ownership before making any transactions.
