Publisher and politician, Dele Momodu, has faulted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria.

Momodu described the move as “the most reckless decision in the history of our nascent democracy,” warning that it plays directly into the hands of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.

In a post on his Instagram page on Tuesday, he accused the PDP of shooting itself in the leg” by yielding to what he called cheap and puerile blackmail from opposition elements allegedly working with the APC.

He wrote:

“Yesterday, one of Africa’s biggest, but seriously embattled, political parties shot itself in the leg by choosing to hide behind one finger. The PDP finally succumbed to the cheap and puerile blackmail of the black sheep in the opposition party who are openly and daringly working for the ruling party.”

The Ovation publisher added that the zoning decision revealed how deeply compromised some influential voices within the PDP have become.

According to him:

“The shame of it was seeing the so-called seasoned politicians engage in self-adulation for taking the most reckless decision in the history of our nascent democracy, by zoning the 2027 presidential candidacy to Southern Nigeria.”

Decision seen as a “done deal” for Tinubu

Momodu argued that the zoning policy effectively hands President Tinubu an easy path to re-election, since the South remains largely under APC’s influence.

He further alleged that the PDP’s internal sabotage is being orchestrated by loyalists of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, whom he described as working tirelessly to weaken the opposition for the benefit of the ruling party.

With the 2027 general elections still two years away, the PDP is already facing fresh divisions and criticisms over whether zoning is the right strategy for reclaiming power.
