President Bola Ahmed Tinubu meets NGX Board, SEC DG in Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the impressive growth of Nigeria’s capital market since he assumed office more than two years ago.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX) and the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Brazil, the President said the expansion in market capitalisation and trading activity has widened opportunities for local and foreign investors.

He noted that the surge reflects renewed investor confidence in his administration’s economic reforms.

“Nigeria’s markets must be a trusted engine of enterprise and prosperity. My government will continue to pursue reforms that unlock capital, protect investors, and drive innovation, so that our economy works for every Nigerian,” President Tinubu said.

Tinubu praises NGX, SEC board leadership

The President praised the NGX Board and SEC leadership for their efforts, while stressing his government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.

He added that dialogue with capital market leaders is crucial to achieving the Renewed Hope Agenda’s economic goals and positioning Nigeria as Africa’s top investment destination.

Tinubu assured that his administration will keep supporting the market and is ready to introduce more reforms to drive expansion.

SEC, NGX highlight reforms under Renewed Hope Agenda

SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama lauded the signing of the Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, describing it as one of Africa’s most comprehensive legal frameworks for capital markets.

He said the Act will help Nigeria achieve a ₦300 trillion market while ensuring fair wealth distribution through stronger investor protection and regulatory clarity.

NGX Group Chairman, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, also commended the President’s economic measures, noting that trading volumes and market value have nearly tripled since his administration began.

He called for a faster listing of major state-owned enterprises, including NNPC Limited, and proposed tax incentives to sustain momentum.

Kwairanga further extended an invitation to President Tinubu to visit the NGX trading floor to celebrate the market’s progress.

Exchange leaders push for innovation and inclusivity

Temi Popoola, Group CEO of NGX, stressed the need to position the Nigerian Exchange as a global hub through stronger partnerships, improved infrastructure, and product innovation.

He added that widening retail investor access through digital platforms will drive inclusive and sustainable growth.

NGX Director Nonso Okpala also commended the administration’s reforms, highlighting exchange rate stability and improved macroeconomic predictability as major enablers of market growth.

He encouraged more Nigerian companies to list on the Exchange as a pathway to democratising wealth and expanding participation.
