Kano Gov, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the full sponsorship of qualified nurses and medical doctors with BSc degrees for overseas master’s degree programmes in various specialised medical fields.

This was made known in a press statement issued to journalists on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam.

Courses tailored to critical health needs

According to Ibrahim Adam, the sponsorship will cover master’s programmes in areas considered crucial for strengthening Kano’s healthcare services.

Some of the approved fields include dermatology, nephrology, intensive care medicine, kidney transplant surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric surgery, neurology, ENT (ear, nose and throat), and psychiatry.

Other specialised areas include cancer care (for nurses and oncologists), dialysis nursing and biomedical engineering, prosthetics, ophthalmic nursing and ophthalmology, interventional cardiology, interventional orthopedics, and interventional radiology.

Strengthening Kano’s health system

The initiative, according to the Governor’s spokesperson, is a strategic move aimed at upgrading the state’s healthcare delivery system by building the capacity of its frontline health workers.

He explained that each of the approved courses is directly relevant to the medical needs of the state, and the programme will help produce highly skilled professionals who can better manage and treat complex health conditions affecting Kano’s large and growing population.
