Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, on Monday formally submitted his resignation from office, citing issues related to ill-health.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since accepted his resignation and extended appreciation for his contributions to the country.

A State House announcement released on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that Badaru stepped down through a letter dated December 1, 2025.

His departure from the federal cabinet takes effect immediately.

According to the statement, President Tinubu conveyed gratitude to the outgoing minister for his service to the country, especially during a period of intensified security pressures and ongoing reforms within the defence sector.

The President is expected to forward the name of his preferred replacement to the Senate before the end of the week.

Badaru, aged 63, was a two-term governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before assuming office as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.

His resignation comes as the administration implements a nationwide security emergency, with President Tinubu projected to outline additional steps in the coming days.

The statement offered no further clarification regarding Badaru’s health issues, but confirmed that the President extended his best wishes for his recovery.
