The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, has praised the outstanding success of the recent Type 2 Polio vaccination exercise, describing it as a major step in protecting the health of children across the state.
The campaign, carried out between March 7 and 8, 2026, and followed by a mop-up exercise from March 11 to 13, covered an impressive 1.4 million children across 11,000 settlements. More than 3,315 health workers were deployed across all 23 Local Government Areas, ensuring broad reach and efficient implementation.
Dr. Abubakar disclosed that the effort was further reinforced by the active participation of 17 Commissioners and six Special Advisers, in line with directives from Governor Ahmad Aliyu. Their involvement, alongside local government chairmen, helped tackle challenges of non-compliance in areas such as Sokoto North, Sokoto South, and Wamakko.
He stressed that the partnership between the state government, development partners, and the committed health workforce played a crucial role in meeting the campaign’s objectives. “This success is a testament to what can be achieved when government, communities, and partners unite for a common goal,” he stated.
The Commissioner assured that strategies are already being implemented to sustain the progress, ensuring that Sokoto remains resolute in its fight against polio.
