The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ajuji Ahmed, says the party remains firmly rooted in Kano and is intensifying efforts to broaden its support base across northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election, despite a recent string of defections.

Ahmed made the remarks on Saturday in response to the departure of two NNPP members of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Sagir Koki, who both defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He maintained that their exit has not diminished the strength of the party.

“I have just two words for them: good luck. Their exit is not a minus to NNPP. In fact, more people are joining the party every day, especially in Kano.”

The chairman said the NNPP is confident of retaining Kano in the next election cycle and has begun targeting additional northern states, such as Jigawa and Kaduna, as part of its expansion strategy.

“The party is open to running alone or in partnership with other political groups if that will strengthen its chances,” he said.

Ahmed reiterated that the NNPP believes it won the governorship election in Taraba but was denied the mandate and expressed optimism about reclaiming more seats in 2027.

Lawmakers who defected had earlier attributed their departure to internal challenges within the NNPP, with several others from Kano and Jigawa also crossing over to the APC in recent months.
