After weeks of swirling political rumours, Senator Suleiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has officially announced his defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmaker confirmed the development on Wednesday via a statement on his verified social media platform, bringing to a close the speculations surrounding his political future.
“Yes, it is true — the rumours regarding my defection are accurate,” he stated.
Driven by commitment to constituents
Sumaila explained that his move to APC is motivated by a sense of duty to his people. He emphasised that his political decisions are guided by the welfare of his constituents.
“All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” he noted.
He further explained that the need to secure a better and more sustainable future for his people heavily influenced his decision.
“I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured,” Sumaila added.
Senator Sumaila’s defection to APC has instantly stirred Kano’s political terrain, especially coming after his fallout with the Kwankwasiyya movement under NNPP.
Reaffirming his loyalty to public service, he pledged to continue fighting for the interest of Kano South, promising that his new political path will focus on delivering tangible benefits to his constituents.
His next political steps are expected to shape discussions ahead of upcoming elections in Kano and beyond.
