The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced plans to sponsor the weddings of repentant thugs in the state.

The Commander-General of Hisbah, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, revealed this development after more than 1,000 youths surrendered their weapons and publicly renounced crime.

“This programme is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s initiative to support youths who have turned away from crime and want to live a decent life,” Sheikh Daurawa said.

Genuine repentance required

While assuring the youths of government’s support, Daurawa warned them to ensure their repentance was sincere.

He encouraged others who are still engaged in violent activities to embrace the opportunity before it is too late.

Speaking at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the police screening was the first step in the rehabilitation process.

NDLEA, government to provide more support

According to the governor, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will also conduct another round of screening to verify the commitment of the repentant youths.

He explained that beyond sponsoring their weddings, the state government will provide start-up capital, vocational training, and even educational opportunities for those who wish to return to school.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, described the initiative as proof of the government’s determination to fight crime while giving young people a second chance at life.

Youth leaders appreciate government’s gesture

Some of the youth leaders, including Kamilu and Buzu Mai Kidan Gangi, expressed gratitude to the government and other stakeholders for supporting their decision to change.

They noted that such interventions would go a long way in discouraging crime and encouraging peace among the youth.
