The Kaduna State Ministry for Local Government Affairs has opened discussions with labour unions on a proposed welfare scheme aimed at improving the living and working conditions of public servants.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Mahmud Lawal, chaired a meeting with labour leaders to consider a request by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna State Multipurpose Co-operative Society Limited to supply motorcycles, agricultural inputs and foodstuffs to workers on loan.
Under the proposal, the cooperative seeks approval to provide 2,000 units of LDA-A009 motorcycles and 7,000 units of electric motorcycles, alongside farm inputs and food items, to staff and union members across the state.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Lawal said the initiative aligns with government efforts to promote workers’ welfare and productivity.
“The ministry is committed to initiatives that ease the economic burden on workers and enhance their productivity,” he said.
“We believe that engaging labour unions constructively is key to achieving effective service delivery at the local government level.”
He explained that the meeting was convened to review the proposal thoroughly and ensure that any approval granted would be fair, transparent and beneficial to all parties.
The engagement, held at the Permanent Secretary’s office, allowed stakeholders to exchange views on implementation strategies and sustainability of the scheme.
Labour representatives at the meeting welcomed the dialogue, describing it as a positive step towards strengthening cooperation between government and organised labour in Kaduna State.
