A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to promptly deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Accord Party and three other political parties over alleged violations of constitutional provisions.

Justice Peter Odo Lifu issued the directive on Monday while delivering judgment in a suit instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of the National Forum of Former Legislators against INEC and a number of political parties.

The suit, identified as FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, questioned the continued involvement of the affected political parties in Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political parties impacted by the judgment are the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The ruling is anticipated to trigger political and legal responses nationwide, particularly as activities leading to the next general election begin to intensify.

Legal analysts say additional court proceedings, including potential appeals and actions by electoral authorities, could influence the eventual resolution of the case.

As of the time this report was filed, INEC and officials of the affected political parties had not released formal reactions to the court judgment.
