The senator representing Bauchi North, Samaila Kaila, has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His defection was announced on Tuesday during the Senate plenary by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who read a letter written by the lawmaker.
In the letter, Kaila cited persistent internal conflicts within the PDP as the major reason for his decision to leave the opposition party, saying the crisis had “gravely constrained” his ability to serve his people effectively.
Cites PDP crisis and need for progress
According to the senator, his political move was based on the desire to realign himself with a “progressive platform” that upholds principles of good governance and national development.
“The Peoples Democratic Party has gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience,” Kaila said in his letter.
He added that his decision was inspired by his commitment to Nigeria’s unity, progress, and discipline in governance, describing the ruling APC as a platform that embodies those ideals.
Backs Tinubu’s reforms and economic agenda
Kaila said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic and governance reforms motivated him to join the APC.
He described the President’s policies as “bold and transformative,” noting that they reflect decisive leadership capable of repositioning Nigeria for growth.
“Consequently, I have chosen to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, and to lend my full commitment to the reforms of His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu,” the senator stated.
He further emphasized that Tinubu’s reform efforts align with his personal vision for Nigeria’s development and democratic advancement.
“These efforts reflect the decisive leadership of our country, and that’s what Nigeria needs,” Kaila said.
Joins growing list of defectors
Kaila’s defection comes shortly after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, also left the PDP for the APC.
The recent wave of defections is seen as part of ongoing realignments ahead of future political contests.
The Bauchi senator now joins the ranks of lawmakers and governors who have switched allegiance to the ruling party, citing faith in Tinubu’s leadership and the APC’s governance philosophy.
