The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has dismissed claims that the opposition coalition plans to dump the ADC for the newly emerging All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
Reports had suggested that once the ADA is fully registered as a political party, members of the coalition would shift their support to it in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
This came after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced last week that 14 out of 171 groups seeking party registration, including ADA, had scaled through the first stage of the process.
Coalition stands by ADC
Reacting to the reports, Abdullahi told Daily Trust that there is no truth in the speculation, insisting that the coalition remains firmly committed to building the ADC into a strong, national democratic party.
“There is no such thing. We have moved on from that. ADC is our party,” Abdullahi said in a message to the newspaper.
The coalition had officially adopted the ADC in July this year, sparking debates over whether it would later shift allegiance to another platform.
Opposition faces challenges
Over the weekend, Abdullahi told journalists that powerful interests were behind the series of litigations targeting the coalition.
According to him, those pushing for a one-party state were working to destabilise the ADC and weaken the opposition.
“We know from day one that what brought us into the coalition, the very forces that were destabilising the other opposition political parties are not going to allow the ADC coalition to just fly without challenge,” he explained.
He stressed that despite these challenges, the coalition remains united and focused on strengthening the ADC as its main political vehicle.
