Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has directed an immediate investigation and emergency relief response following a fire incident that destroyed sections of the popular Gombe timber market, popularly known as Kasuwar Katako, located along the Railway Station area of the state capital.

The blaze, which occurred late Monday night after traders had closed for business, consumed several shops and merchandise, leaving numerous traders with significant losses.

In a statement issued by the Director-General, Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governor described the incident as painful and distressing, noting that it had disrupted the means of livelihood of many hardworking residents who rely on the market for survival.

Yahaya expressed sympathy with the affected traders and business operators, assuring them of the state government’s backing during what he described as a trying period.

“We assure them that the government stands firmly with them at this difficult moment,” the governor said.

He instructed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant agencies to promptly evaluate the extent of the destruction, determine the cause of the fire and provide immediate assistance to victims to ease the impact of their losses.

The governor also commended the Gombe State Fire Service, personnel from Gombe State University, the Federal Fire Service, private tanker operators, security agencies and the Nigerian Red Cross Society for their swift response, which he said helped in preventing the fire from spreading further.

While calling on victims to remain calm, Yahaya reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing fire prevention and response capacity across the state, including plans to establish a fully equipped, state-of-the-art fire service office.

The statement further revealed that the governor was briefed on an accident involving one of the firefighting trucks during the operation, expressing concern for those affected and offering prayers for their speedy recovery.
