Kwara State Polytechnic has confirmed the death of a former student, Oyelade Habeeb Olawale, in what is believed to be a cult-related clash near the institution on Tuesday.
The institution’s management stated that Olawale, who studied Civil Engineering with matriculation number ND/20/CEC/FT/206, was attacked during a confrontation reportedly involving former students associated with different cult groups who had returned to the area surrounding the campus.
The disturbance triggered fear within the Polytechnic environment, prompting the school’s security department to step in and restore order.
Multiple individuals suspected of participating in the attack were said to have been apprehended by campus security and transferred to the police for further action.
While confirming the situation, the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, described the incident as an unfortunate occurrence that challenges the school’s dedication to maintaining stability and a peaceful academic atmosphere.
“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” she said.
Halimat noted that the security unit acted promptly through intelligence internally gathered, which enabled the arrest of the suspects currently being held by the police.
She also said that management is in collaboration with the security operatives to ensure accountability and prevent any further breach of peace.
According to her, the campus is now calm, and academic routines have continued without hindrance.
“The Polytechnic remains vigilant against any form of violence or cult-related activities. We urge students and members of the community to report suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities,” she added.
