The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Northern Nigeria has voiced deep grief over the passing of the prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

CAN described his death as a significant spiritual and moral setback for the country.

Family sources confirmed that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the age of 98.

In a condolence message released in Kaduna on Thursday, the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, said the revered scholar was among the few religious leaders in the nation whose teachings consistently fostered peace, humility and respect across faith boundaries.

Hayab stated that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s decades of devotion, especially his dedication to Qur’anic learning and ethical discipline, shaped many followers and greatly supported social stability in Northern Nigeria.

He noted that Northern CAN regarded the scholar as an individual who used his position to encourage harmony and discourage conflict, even in moments of heightened tension in the region.

According to CAN, the passing of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi should remind Nigerians of the pressing need to uphold the ideals he stood for, especially at a period marked by religious divides, political unease and growing insecurity.

He called on both Muslim and Christian communities to use this moment as a chance to strengthen interfaith engagement and rebuild confidence among diverse groups.

Northern CAN conveyed its sympathy to the cleric’s family, the Tijjaniyya movement, the Bauchi Emirate and the Muslim Ummah nationwide, praying that God would console all who mourn and grant the late scholar everlasting peace.

Hayab added that Northern CAN would remain committed to genuine initiatives that promote unity and ensure that followers of both religions play constructive roles in safeguarding Nigeria’s stability and development.

He stressed that the most meaningful honour to the late scholar is for Nigerians to recommit themselves to peace, tolerance and national unity.
