President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military leadership as part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to reinforce the nation’s security framework.
In the new appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa.
The President also approved the appointment of Major-General W. Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff.
Similarly, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke will now serve as the Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas becomes the new Chief of Naval Staff.
Continuity and appreciation for outgoing officers
However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position, ensuring continuity in intelligence operations.
President Tinubu, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, and other outgoing service chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”
The President noted that their contributions have been invaluable to the country’s security and stability during their tenure.
New appointees charged to uphold professionalism
In his message to the newly appointed officers, President Tinubu urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by demonstrating professionalism, vigilance, and unity—values he said are the hallmark of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He emphasized that the new leadership must work collectively to further enhance the effectiveness and reputation of the military in safeguarding the nation.
According to the presidency, all the new appointments take immediate effect.
