Malam Sani Adamu and 'his pupils' in Kano

In Yakasai, a lively neighbourhood in Kano city, a retired schoolteacher, Malam Sani Adamu, has found a new calling—teaching children on the streets during school holidays.

Malam Sani, who once taught in formal classrooms at Nasarawa local government, now gathers children in his community and engages them with laughter, jokes, and creative teaching methods.

He says his goal is simple: to help the children revise their studies so they don’t forget before school resumes. Importantly, he always seeks the parents’ permission before starting.

Speaking with Iconic Times24, the retired teacher explained that he uses fun, interactive techniques to teach subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, and even Islamic religious studies.

His open-air classes have turned into a community spectacle, attracting admiration from both children and adults.

Social media makes him go viral

Auwal Surajo Kofar Mata, one of the people documenting Malam Sani’s work and sharing it online, said the retired teacher’s unique style caught their attention.

“His lessons are so engaging that we felt they deserved to be recorded and shared with the world,” Auwal said.

“He brings joy to learning while giving children valuable knowledge.”

According to him, the initiative has gained wide attention on social media, with many praising the effort while some critics argue that children should not be gathered on the street for lessons.

Calls for support from government and society

Despite the criticisms, many observers see Malam Sani’s effort as a creative way to improve education in Northern Nigeria, where learning faces several challenges.

Some analysts believe his method should be applauded, not condemned, and have urged government, NGOs, and individuals to step in and support such grassroots initiatives that could make a meaningful impact on Nigeria’s educational system.
