Yobe flood

The Yobe State Government has launched an immediate emergency response following a torrential downpour in Potiskum in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025.

Governor Mai Mala Buni, in a directive issued shortly after receiving the alert, ordered state emergency teams to move swiftly to the affected areas to provide life-saving support, protection, and relief.

According to preliminary reports, there have been no casualties as of the time of the announcement.

Assessment and relief efforts underway
A government statement confirmed that detailed assessments are ongoing to determine the extent of damage caused by the heavy rains.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has already deployed field teams to provide immediate assistance.
Governor Buni assured residents that the government will mobilize all necessary resources to aid affected communities and prevent further harm.

The statement also stressed the administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the aftermath of the disaster.

Areas hardest hit by flooding

Initial spatial analysis revealed that the flooding impacted several locations, including Old Prison, Filin Mashe, Unguwar Makafi, Unguwar Jaje Bakin Kwari, Afghanistan, Tsangaya, Karofi, Bayan Garejin Dan Juma, Jigawa Bayan, Makarahuta, and Tandari.

Many of these communities are located in low-lying areas, making them vulnerable to water overflow during intense rainfall.
Authorities are urging residents in such areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with safety officials.

In addition to emergency measures, SEMA called on community leaders, landowners, and institutions to intensify public awareness campaigns on safe land use.

The agency warned against building on waterways, stressing that improper land development worsens the risk of flooding and destruction.

Residents have been advised to report any potential hazards and comply with safety directives to prevent future disasters.
