Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved and distributed food items to more than 6,000 Christian widows and vulnerable persons ahead of the Christmas celebrations.
The beneficiaries include 1,605 internally displaced persons, each receiving one bag of rice, one carton of spaghetti, and one gallon of cooking oil.
The distribution exercise took place on Monday as part of the state government’s annual Christmas support to the Christian community.
The intervention is part of a policy sustained since 2019, through which the Zulum administration provides end-of-year support to vulnerable Christians across the state.
The governor also maintains a yearly free transport scheme for non-indigene Christians to travel to their ancestral homes during the Christmas period.
The support is aimed at easing economic pressure and ensuring that vulnerable households can celebrate the season with dignity.
Zulum said the gesture reflects the state’s commitment to peace, unity, and shared responsibility among all residents, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
He said Borno State has continued to enjoy peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians, noting that both religions promote tolerance and harmony.
The governor prayed for sustained peace and mutual understanding among communities in the state.
John Bogna Bakeni, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Borno State, thanked the governor for the consistent support to the Christian community.
Bakeni said the intervention has brought relief and renewed hope to thousands of Christians in the state during the Christmas season.
