President Bola Tinubu has urged the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to serve with integrity and ensure Nigeria’s elections remain credible.

Tinubu gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja during the swearing-in ceremony of the sixth substantive INEC chairman at the State House Council Chamber.

He said Amupitan’s nomination and confirmation by the Senate reflect confidence in his capacity by both the executive and legislative arms of government.

“Your nomination and the subsequent confirmation by the Senate are a testament to your capacity and the confidence reposed in you by both the executive and the legislative arms of government,” Tinubu said.

The president reminded the new INEC chairman that his appointment marks the beginning of a challenging but rewarding journey that requires honesty, discipline, and dedication.

Tinubu noted that since 1999, Nigeria has made progress in consolidating its democracy through reforms that have strengthened key institutions, including the electoral system.

“Our democracy has come a long way in 25 years. We have consolidated and strengthened our democratic institutions, particularly in electoral systems, through innovations and reforms,” he added.

He described elections as the foundation of democracy and said their credibility determines public trust in government.

Tinubu also said the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election would be a test for the new INEC leadership.

“It is important that our elections are free, fair, and credible. We must consistently improve our electoral process, addressing the challenges of yesterday and innovating for today and tomorrow,” he said.

He urged Amupitan to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and enhance the capacity of the commission to deliver transparent elections.

Amupitan, 58, replaces Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC chairman from 2015 to 2025.

The Senate confirmed his appointment on October 16, 2025.

During his screening, Amupitan promised to reform the electoral process, strengthen institutional independence, and rebuild public trust in the commission.

He is expected to assume duty immediately.
