The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, alongside the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, and several senior officials for what it described as gross misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.
In a statement issued after an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, the party explained that the decision followed an extensive investigation into allegations of financial mismanagement, abuse of office, and conduct deemed damaging to the unity and reputation of the SDP.
According to a communiqué released by the party, the affected officials were found guilty of holding unauthorized meetings, issuing public statements that undermined the party leadership, and engaging in acts aimed at destabilizing its internal structure.
Party insists on discipline and accountability
National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, said the expulsion was based on the adoption of the report submitted by the Disciplinary Committee, which had been reviewed and validated by a White Paper Committee.
He revealed that the expelled members were apprehended by security operatives while allegedly in possession of sensitive documents and valuables taken from the party’s national secretariat, noting that criminal prosecution against them was already underway.
Aiyenigba emphasized that the action was crucial to restoring order, discipline, and transparency within the SDP.
“The SDP will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens its integrity or unity. The party remains committed to internal democracy and will continue to take decisive action against any member who violates its rules,” he stated.
Interim leadership to take charge pending convention
The SDP announced plans to appoint interim officials to fill the vacant leadership positions ahead of its next national convention, where new executives will be elected.
Alhaji Shehu Gabam was appointed National Chairman of the SDP in March 2022.
However, in June 2025, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspended him and several others following court orders and internal disputes.
The development led to a split within the party, with Gabam and his loyalists challenging the legitimacy of the suspension.
Despite the leadership crisis, the SDP says it remains focused on rebuilding its structure, strengthening its grassroots appeal, and preparing for future elections under a more transparent and disciplined framework.
