The Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kwara State Command, Mr. H. A. Ibrahim, has announced that the Service will soon establish a liaison office at the University of Ilorin to address the immigration needs of foreign students studying at the institution.
Mr. Ibrahim made the disclosure last Thursday (December 11, 2025) while speaking at an orientation programme organised by the University’s Centre for International Education (CIE) at the Faculty of Education Lecture Theatre.
The Comptroller, who was represented at the event by an Assistant Comptroller in the Command, Mr. O. K. Aliyu, stated that pending the establishment of the liaison office, international students should feel free to visit the NIS Command Headquarters to resolve any immigration-related concerns.
Mr. Ibrahim advised the students to familiarise themselves with basic Nigerian laws and cultural practices, noting that ignorance would not be accepted as an excuse for misconduct.
He also urged them to ensure the safety of important documents such as passports and visas, stressing that proper documentation would help them avoid unnecessary embarrassment.
The Comptroller further encouraged the students to foster positive relationships among themselves and with their Nigerian counterparts, advising them to always seek clarification from relevant authorities whenever they are unsure of any information.
He assured that as long as international students comply with the rules of engagement, they would enjoy peaceful academic pursuits, protection against all forms of discrimination and access to legal assistance.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, welcomed the newly admitted international students, stating that they could not have chosen a better institution for their studies.
Prof. Egbewole, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Technology), Prof. Mukhtair Adeiza Etudaiye, advised the students to adhere strictly to the guidance provided by the immigration authorities.
He also encouraged them to interact and network with fellow students in order to build lasting friendships.
Describing the University and its host community as peaceful and conducive for learning, Prof. Egbewole urged the students to remain focused on their studies and take full advantage of the services offered by the institution.
Earlier, the Director of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Lateef Onireti Ibraheem, assured the international students of efficient service delivery.
Prof. Onireti encouraged them to approach him or other CIE staff whenever assistance is needed, explaining that the centre exists to ensure their stay at the University is peaceful, productive and rewarding.
