A case of Lassa fever has been confirmed at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) in Kano State.
According to Salisu Inuwa, spokesperson for the hospital’s Infection Prevention and Control Unit, two suspected cases were identified.
One patient, from Garun Mallam Local Government Area, died before testing could be conducted. The second patient, who visited the hospital on April 5, tested positive.
In response, AKTH has activated emergency protocols, screening individuals who had contact with the confirmed case. Some hospital staff reported malaria-like symptoms but remain stable and under observation.
The Kano State Ministry of Health has deployed a contact-tracing team to Garun Mallam. Preliminary findings suggest the confirmed patient may have contracted the virus in Bauchi State while caring for a sick relative.
Authorities have urged the public to stay calm and follow health advisories as containment efforts continue.
